Sie handeln von Atomen, Asteroiden und Aliens, aber auch von den Menschen, die sich seit Jahrtausenden bemühen, diesen Fragen auf den Grund zu gehen. Eine kurze Geschichte von fast allem ist längst ein Weltbestseller, und das hat viele Gründe: Bryson schreibt humorvoll statt nüchtern, persönlich statt abstrakt, charmant statt hölzern, anschaulich statt hochgestochen. Und nicht zufällig beginnt sein Buch mit einem Kindheitserlebnis: Wissenschaftliche Neugier treibt schließlich jedes Kind um, das sich fragt, woher man weiß, dass die Erde innen flüssig ist, und ob es wohl irgendwo im All Außerirdische gibt. Jetzt können endlich auch junge Leser Innen ab zehn Jahren in ihrem eigenen ? Bryson? schmökern. Dafür wurde die ? Erwachsenenausgabe? zum einen hervorragend gekürzt ? man vermisst kaum Informationen, sogar wenn man beide Ausgaben nebeneinander liest ? und zum anderen herrlich illustriert. Jede Doppelseite bildet nun eine gut strukturierte, übersichtliche inhaltliche Einheit. Brysons Humor wird dabei durch die Illustrationen und Fotos wunderbar unterstützt. Aber vor allem machen die Bilder die Informationen (vor allem die sehr abstrakten) noch anschaulicher und damit verständlicher. Und sie geben zahlreiche ? versteckte? Informationen (zum Beispiel zur Epoche, in der ein Forscher gelebt hat), auf die man ansonsten viel Text verwenden müsste. Das klingt nicht nur gut, es ist schlichtweg D I E ideale Lösung für ein populärwissenschaftliches Buch: Text und Bild ergänzen sich, lassen einen staunen, lachen und verstehen. Deshalb sollten nicht nur Kinder, sondern auch Erwachsene, die sich für ? fast alles? interessieren, zu dieser Ausgabe des Bestsellers greifen. Bryson traces America's history through the language of the time, then goes on to discuss words culled from everyday activities: immigration, eating, shopping, advertising, going to the movies, and others.

Did you know, for example, that Teddy Roosevelt's "speak softly and carry a big stick" credo has its roots in a West African proverb? Or that actor Walter Matthau's given name is Walter Mattaschanskayasky? Or that the supposedly frigid Puritans-who called themselves " Saints, " by the way-had something called a pre-contract, which was a license for premarital sex? < I> Made in America is an excellent discussion of American English, but what makes the book such a treasure is that it offers much, much more.

Amerikaner sind von Großbritannien fasziniert - es hat etwas Vertrautes, und doch ist es fremd; es ist in vielerlei Hinsicht dasselbe, andererseits aber auch so anders. Bryson gelingt es, seine Wahlheimat einem amerikanischen Publikum vorzuführen. Man bekommt dabei niemals den Eindruck, daß Bryson zu sehr Außenstehender ist, um die wahre Natur des Landes zu erfassen. < I> Notes from a Small Island findet das richtige Verhältnis von unbekümmert-amerikanischem Schreibstil und ausgeprägt britischem Vokabular.
