England für Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene beschreibt Bryson auf humorvolle Art und Weise seinen Alltag in den USA, der von allerlei kuriosen und skurillen Vorkomnissen gekennzeichnet ist. Selbst Amerikaner hat Bryson nach fast 20-jährigem Aufenthalt in Großbritannien beschlossen, samt Familie in die Vereinigten Staaten zurückzukehren. Dort angekommen, muss er feststellen, dass sich während seiner Abwesenheit einiges verändert hat und er oft in den alltäglichen und banalsten Situationen mit ungewöhnlichen Reaktionen seiner Landsleute rechnen muss. Den Blick geschärft nimmt er sich in seinen Kolumnen so ungewöhnlichen amerikanischen Eigenschaften wie z.B. Käse aus Sprühdosen in "Im Junkfood Paradies" oder eigenartige Feiertage in "Hail to the Chief - Es lebe der Boss" vor. Aber auch vor seiner eigenen Familie macht er nicht halt. Oft wird seine englische Frau Zielscheibe seines erfrischenden Humors. Ironisch und sarkastisch beschreibt er das Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten und seine Einwohner. Bill Bryson ist den Lesern im deutschsprachigen Raum kein Unbekannter mehr, davon zeugt seine immer größer werdende Fan-Gemeinde. Obwohl hervorragend übersetzt, kann man die stilistischen und sprachlichen Feinheiten natürlich am besten im amerikanisch-englischen Original-Text I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After Twenty Years Away nachempfinden.
